They plan to use their degree to work with communities to establish sustainable cities, educate about the intersectionality of environmental justice, and tackle environmental racism. Sovann-Jahlee applied to the Capitol Pathways program to gain more insight into how the work toward environmental justice converges with the legislative process. They hope to gain useful skills and connections that can guide them in their future endeavors.
Outside of the Capitol Pathways program, Sovann-Jahlee does on-the-ground work in sustainability and environmentalism working with BrightSide Produce and providing fresh fruit and vegetables to corner stores. Subsequently, as a 2024 Philips Scholar, they spend their time creating connections with various environmental and social justice organizations from many different backgrounds to come together for summer environmental programming for black and brown youth led by black and brown educators, experts and organizers. On campus, they are the president of their school’s queer straight alliance, bridging the gap between queerness and other intersectional identities. They also enjoy playing guitar and piano, taking part in their campus pop collective ensemble, and thrifting, transforming something old into a new beloved piece.
