Breakout Sessions

Federal Executive Orders on DEI: Navigating the Changing Landscape (Room OGC 200)

Federal executive orders targeting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs and policies have caused ripple effects here in the state of Minnesota. Amidst the confusion and disruption caused by these actions, community leaders are meeting the moment to understand and respond to the impact of these orders on their organizational work, mission and purpose.

Join us for a robust panel conversation with leaders from the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors who will discuss risk assessment, implications for funding, and strategies to build resilience and stand in solidarity on their commitments to DEI.

Panelists: Josh Crosson (EdAllies), LeeAnn Rasachak (WomenVenture), Terri Thao (Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies)

Moderated by Eduardo Suárez (Minnesota National Guard and Citizens League Board Member)

Creating Career Pathways for BIPOC Leaders (Room OGC 111)

For a decade, Capitol Pathways has opened access to policy and public service careers for Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) youth. In a time when DEI programming is experiencing scrutiny and challenges, how can we continue to create pathways to opportunity and invest in building BIPOC leadership during uncertain times?

This session will feature an engaging panel conversation with Capitol Pathways alumni and hosts to explore the impact of pathway programs for BIPOC leaders, the challenges and strategies that work, and what support is needed to carve a path forward for the next generation of BIPOC leaders.

Panelists: Jeru Gobeze (Habitat for Humanity of Minnesota, Host), Kevin Huynh (MN8, alum), Stephany Aguirre Lopez (City of Saint Paul, alum), Kowsar Mohamed (State of Minnesota’s Office of Inclusion, alum).

Moderated by Robert Harper (Vizient, Inc., alum and Citizens League Board Member)

Centering Community in Your Advocacy Journey (Room OGC 113)

Are you interested in advocating for issues in your community? Overwhelmed and not sure where to start or even what issue to work on? Come to this breakout session to learn about building your personal policy agenda, using your skills to create your advocacy style and evaluate issues using an intersectionality lens to center community needs in policy work. You will learn tips to help you identify organizations and coalitions advocating for issues you care about and walk away ready to dive into advocacy, your way!

Speaker: Sara Gangelhoff, Director of Advocacy & Innovation at the Women’s Foundation of Minnesota

From Surviving to Thriving: Resilience Skills for Leaders in Advocacy (Room OGC 114)

This session explores how leaders in policy and advocacy can protect their well-being and lead with strength in today’s challenging political climate. We’ll ground ourselves in a trauma-informed lens and explore common signs of burnout, emotional fatigue, and boundary erosion. Participants will then work in small groups to unpack a real-world case scenario and reflect on practical resilience strategies. We’ll close with a large-group discussion to share insights, lessons, and tools for sustaining passion and protecting mental health and sustainability in advocacy work.

Speaker: Chao Yang, MPH, SHRM-CP, Organizational Effectiveness Principal Consultant and Owner, Ziag Management Consulting LLC

Arts & Crafts Area (OGC Lobby)

If you would prefer not to attend a breakout session, we will have an Arts & Crafts: Create Your Own Vision Board area set up in the OGC lobby. You are welcomed to stay in this area during the 1-hour breakout session period.
