The 2020 Census presents a unique and important opportunity for all residents of Minnesota to make an impact on public policy and quality of life in our state. The data collected by the census will be used to allocate billions of dollars in federal funding, to help guide where leaders dedicate resources within our state, and even to determine the number of representatives Minnesota has in Congress.
“Every voice must be heard and counted for Minnesota to continue to address the issues we face and to embrace opportunity for all residents. The State Demographic Center is excited to partner with the Citizens League in our efforts to ensure an accurate count in Minnesota on Census Day, April 1, 2020.” – Andrew Virden, Director of Census Operations and Engagement, Minnesota State Demographic Center
Working in partnership with the Minnesota State Demographic Center, the Citizens League will be working with community-based organizations to convene panel discussions for and answer questions from community members representing traditionally undercounted communities. These events build on a pilot event that took place in 2018, which was conducted all in Spanish. In January 2020, we will conduct similar panel discussions in other languages: Somali, Hmong and Spanish. All three events will include live English interpretation via headsets as well.
It is in the interest of every Minnesotan to help everyone living in Minnesota get counted. The best way to do this is to answer questions, alleviate concerns, and help our community feel welcome and compelled to be counted.
