Throughout history, Minnesota and Canada have shared more than just a border. From natural resources to tourism to energy, we have built a relationship that continues to evolve and flourish.

Join the Citizens League Emerging Leaders Committee, Canadian Consul General Martin Loken and Director of the Office of Energy Security Bill Glahn as they host a discussion on Minnesota and Canada's energy relationship over the past several decades.

Martin%20Loken.JPGIn 2008, Martin Loken was named Canada's Consul General in Minneapolis, serving as Canada's senior representative in the United State's upper Midwest states of Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota. Consul Loken joined Canada's Foreign Service in 1990, with overseas assignments in the Canadian Embassy in Prague and at Canada's Permanent Mission to the World Trade Organization and The United Nations in Geneva. Through the headquarters of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, he has been responsible for a range of geographic and functional issues, including science and technology relations with Japan and global human rights. From 2002 to 2008 he served in the Trade Policy and Negotiations Branch, where he worked on several major trade agreements and negotiations, including Deputy Chief Negotiator for free trade talks with Colombia, Peru, and the European Free Trade Association, Chief Negotiator for talks with the Dominican Republic, and Deptuy Coordinator for the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Also in 2008, Gov. Pawlenty appointed William Glahn Director of Minnesota Office of Energy Security. Mr. Glahn is one of Minnesota's chief experts on energy supply, regulatory structure and renewable energy opportunities. His track record includes former principal and founder of Piedmont Consulting, an energy management consulting firm for local governments, large energy users, universities and consumer advocates, as well as Vice President and Controller for the Minnesota Municipal Power Agency. Within the Office of Energy Security, Mr. Glahn coordinates energy and climate issues throughout Gov. Pawlenty's administration, allowing the public easier access to energy information and technical assistance. Mr. Glahn credits Minnesota as a national leader with an energy policy that promotes renewable and energy security.

Both Tenured leaders bring vast experiences into relatively newly appointed roles. We hope you'll join our discussion with Consul Loken and Mr. Glahn about what trading energy means today, how it has evolved over time and what's in store for the future.
