The Background
With a critical achievement gap in mathematics, new standards in science, and continual emphasis on STEM curriculum, secondary school math, science and technology educators are facing new challenges. How can achievement in STEM be improved through the development of communication skills, group action, awareness of community issues, and the impact science, technology, and mathematics concepts have on society?By utilizing civic and public policy issues as a context for math, science, and technology problems, students would not only understand technical concepts but also realize their political power and develop an awareness of the real-world interconnectedness of these issues and policy.
The Roundtable
This roundtable discussion has been organized to start an important conversation around the potential to integrate civic ideals into our STEM-focused curriculum. With a diverse group of perspectives, we aim to coherently develop a report after the event for distribution to policy makers and community leaders to further this important conversation. The Facilitator
