Colin Beavan tried to live for a year without making an environmental impact: no trash, no elevators, no car, no products in packages, no air-conditioning, no television. But he wasn't living in a commune in the backwoods, he was living in New York City with his wife and toddler. While most of us wouldn't choose to go as far as Beavan, his experiment taught him the things you could do beyond recycling to reduce your part of the carbon cycle.
