Is Minnesota Becoming Average?
|
In 1972, Governor Wendell Anderson's smiling face appeared in mailboxes across the country as Time magazine celebrated "The Good Life in Minnesota." Minnesota has long sat at or near the top of national rankings on educational attainment, labor force participation, home ownership, health, and income. Minnesotans have been rightfully proud of a state where, in the immortal words of Garrison Keillor, "...the women are strong, the men are good looking, and all the children are above average." Thirty-five years later, Minnesota finds itself in or moving towards the middle of the pack. After 30 years of unemployment rates well below the national average, Minnesota's unemployment rate now matches or is occasionally above the national rate. Significant gaps persist between white Minnesotans and Minnesotans of color in educational attainment, poverty, home ownership, and health outcomes. And though income remains relatively high, job and income growth now lag behind the nation as a whole. |

Do these numbers reflect a temporary aberration or a deeper economic transformation? This year's Policy Analysis Conference will examine these issues in more depth to help answer the question, "Is Minnesota becoming average?" Attend the Policy Analysis Conference and find out what's really going on in Lake Wobegon.
The conference provides an opportunity for analysts and policy-makers to explore timely topics that reflect the importance of analysis in formulating policy decisions in government. Conference sessions provide an opportunity to:
- Gain insight into current trends and changes in the policy-making environment
- Explore current policy issues and processes in concurrent workshop sessions
- Share ideas with others from around Minnesota
