Reception to follow

Nate Garvis, Citizens League Board Member and Vice President of Government Relations at Target Corp., will discuss how the civic role of lawyers has changed over time and what this means for individual lawyers, law firms, and the Bar.

Attendees will be encouraged to think about their ethical and professional responsibilities as individual lawyers and members of the legal profession.

Minnesota Rules of Professional Responsibility Rule 6.1: “Voluntary Pro Bono Publico Service” requires that lawyers aspire to donate 50 hours pro bono legal work each year, a substantial portion of which should be free legal services to persons of limited means or charitable and civic organizations. Rule 6.1 adds that lawyers should provide additional services through “participation in activities for improving the law, the legal system or the legal profession.”

This event will explore:

  • How is society changing and what does this mean for the common good?
  • How do societal transformations impact other institutional forces?
  • How do they impact the legal community?
  • What skills do lawyers bring to the civic community?
  • How can these legal skills enhance the public good?
  • What are the ethical and professional responsibilities of lawyers, law firms, and the Bar to use these skills within the legal community and in the civic community?

Attendees will be challenged to think broadly about legal ethics and professional responsibility beyond the important responsibility to engage in pro bono legal work. The event will include concrete ways that attendees can expand their level of civic engagement and use their legal skills to increase the civic capacity in their communities.

This event is free and open to lawyers, law students, and other community members interested in exploring the civic role of lawyers.
