Mind Opener: Partisan Endorsements and an Independent Judiciary with Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Alan Page

Sponsored by the Citizens League and St. Thomas School of Law

Join the Citizens League for a morning Mind Opener with Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Alan Page. A daylong conference on the Republican Party v. White decision and its effects on Minnesota's process for selecting state court justices will follow.

Following two court decisions in Republican Party v. White Minnesota's process for selecting its state court judges may have been transformed. This conference will examine a number of questions. How will the White decisions change the manner in which we select judges? Will the changes improve or diminish the quality of our state judiciary? If the changes are not for the good, what options might Minnesota consider to ensure a fair, impartial, and excellent state judiciary?

The conference will begin with opening remarks by the Honorable Alan C. Page, Associate Justice for the Minnesota Supreme Court about judicial independence and selection. Following Justice Page's remarks, two panels of distinguished lawyers and academics will address the issues raised by the White decisions.
