Serving Citizens Better: Promoting Excellence in Public Management

Friday January 27 7:30am - 12:30pm
Cowles Auditorium Hubert H. Humphrey Center
301 19th Avenue South
Minneapolis, MN 55455

Americans' confidence in government is dwindling. This is not surprising given recent government missteps and failures as illustrated in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Taxpayers are leery of picking up the tab because of deep suspicions of waste and inefficiency.

Winning back the confidence of Americans requires a sustained commitment to effective and efficient government performance. And, every dollar saved from management innovation is one less dollar that is needed from taxpayers, which is the vigilance that Americans expect.

On January 27, 2006, the Humphrey Institute's Center for the Study of Politics and Governance will host a major conference that will bring together national experts, the Governor's office, state legislators, state and local government practitioners, and the Citizens League to discuss the best practices in public management around the country and the steps we can take in Minnesota to improve government performance.

The conference is co-sponsored by the Citizens League and by the Humphrey Institute's Public and Nonprofit Leadership Center.

The conference will address a number of key questions. How can the management of government be improved? Can the internet be used to speed government responsiveness to citizens while saving money? With a large portion of state government employees about to retire, are there incentives and flexible workplace policies to help retain the best of these valued workers? Instead of simply approving budgets based on organized pressure, how can we track the performance of government programs and then link this to decisions about budget?

This event is free and open to the public, however registration is appreciated. To register, please email the Center for the Study of Politics and Governance at cspg@hhh.umn.edu with your name, address and telephone number.
